Brand Deals and Tax: How UK Creators Should Report Sponsored Income

Sponsored content is now the largest single income stream for most professional UK creators. Brand deals range from £500 for a single Instagram post to six figures for a multi-platform campaign, and every pound is taxable. The tax treatment depends on how you are structured, what you actually delivered, and whether the brand is UK-based or international. Getting the reporting right keeps HMRC’s enforcement team out of your inbox.

Brand Deal Income Is Trading Income

Whether you operate as a sole trader or through a limited company, payment for content created in exchange for an agreed fee is taxable trading income. There is no special exemption for influencer work. The £1,000 trading allowance is the only relief, and any creator earning regular brand deals will exceed that allowance with a single campaign.

Record the Gross Fee, Not the Net

The fee declared as income should be the gross amount agreed in the contract, before agency commission, payment processor fee, or withholding tax. If a brand pays your agent £5,000 and the agent passes you £4,250 after a 15% commission, your taxable income is £5,000 and the £750 commission is a deductible expense. Reporting only the net £4,250 understates your income and creates a compliance issue HMRC’s data matching tools will eventually flag.

Cash and Product: Both Count

Some brand deals pay partly in cash and partly in product. Both are taxable at full value. A campaign with a £2,000 fee plus a £500 product retainer counts as £2,500 of income, even though you only see £2,000 in your bank account. Treat product compensation the same way as any other gifted item: retail value, declared as income, expenses claimed against it.

Allowable Costs Against Sponsored Income

Costs incurred specifically for a brand deal are deductible. Production costs. Paid editors. Travel to a shoot location. Props and styling. Equipment used across multiple brand deals can be claimed proportionally or capitalised and depreciated. Personal grooming and clothing are not normally deductible, with a narrow exception where they are specifically required for the role and unsuitable for everyday wear.

International Brand Deals

US and EU brands often pay in their local currency and may withhold tax at source. UK income tax applies to the full sterling-equivalent amount. Any foreign tax withheld is generally available for credit against your UK liability under the relevant double tax treaty. The currency conversion approach depends on whether you are accounting on a cash or accruals basis, and HMRC publishes monthly and yearly average rates that can also be used. Get the method agreed with your accountant and stay consistent year to year.

VAT on Brand Deals

For VAT-registered creators, the place of supply rules decide whether VAT applies. UK brand deals are standard 20% VAT. EU and rest-of-world deals to business customers are typically outside the scope of UK VAT under reverse charge rules. We see smaller creators trip up here in both directions: charging VAT on overseas invoices unnecessarily, or failing to charge it on UK invoices and having to absorb the cost from the fee.

The creators with the easiest tax life log every brand deal in a single tracker: date, brand, fee, currency, agent commission, expenses, VAT treatment. A specialist creator Self Assessment service takes the tracker at year end and produces a return that holds up to scrutiny without any drama.
