HMRC and Influencer Income: What to Do If You Have Not Declared Your Earnings

If you are reading this because you have been earning from content creation and have not told HMRC, you are not alone. A huge number of influencers, streamers, and creators fall into this situation. It usually happens for one of three reasons. You did not realise your income was taxable, you thought it was too small to matter, or you kept meaning to sort it out and just never got around to it.

None of those reasons make you a criminal. But all of them leave you exposed to penalties and interest that grow the longer you wait. The best thing you can do right now is take action before HMRC contacts you first.

HMRC Is Actively Targeting Creator Income

This is not speculation. HMRC has publicly stated that they are focusing enforcement efforts on the creator economy. They use data from payment processors, platform disclosures, and social media monitoring to identify people who appear to be earning but are not filing returns.

In recent years HMRC has issued nudge letters to thousands of individuals they suspect of undeclared online income. These letters are not penalties in themselves, but they are a clear signal that HMRC has you on their radar. Ignoring a nudge letter makes things significantly worse because it removes the “I did not know” defence. If you have received one of these letters, or if you think you might, the time to act is now.

Voluntary Disclosure: Your Best Option

HMRC distinguishes between people who come forward voluntarily and people they have to chase. The difference in how you are treated is substantial.

If you make a voluntary disclosure before HMRC contacts you, the penalties for late filing and late payment are reduced significantly. In many cases, if HMRC accepts that your failure to declare was not deliberate, the penalties can be as low as zero percent of the tax owed plus interest on the late payment.

If HMRC comes to you first, the penalties jump. If they determine the non disclosure was deliberate, which becomes much harder to argue once they have already contacted you, penalties can reach up to 100 percent of the tax owed on top of the tax itself.

A specialist firm of accountants for influencers can manage the entire voluntary disclosure process for you, including calculating what you owe, preparing the necessary returns, and communicating with HMRC on your behalf.

What the Process Looks Like

The voluntary disclosure process is more straightforward than most people expect.

  • First, you gather your income records. This means downloading earnings reports from every platform you have earned from, pulling bank statements for the relevant years, and identifying any brand deals or affiliate income you received.
  • Second, your accountant prepares the outstanding returns. They will calculate the tax, National Insurance, any interest owed, and any applicable penalties for each year you missed.
  • Third, the disclosure is submitted. This is sent to HMRC along with payment or a payment plan proposal if you cannot pay the full amount immediately. HMRC does accept payment arrangements in most cases.

The whole process can take as little as a few weeks once your records are gathered. The relief most people feel once it is done is significant. No more looking over your shoulder.

How Far Back Can HMRC Go?

For careless errors, HMRC can go back up to six years. For deliberate non disclosure, they can go back up to twenty years. This is why getting out in front of it matters. The longer the period of non disclosure, the more years HMRC can potentially assess.

In practice, most voluntary disclosures for influencers cover two to four years. The amounts involved are usually manageable, especially if you work with a specialist who ensures you claim all allowable expenses against the income so you are only paying tax on the actual profit, not the gross figure.

Register with HMRC as soon as your combined self-employed income exceeds £1,000/year. It’s quick to do online and avoids penalties.
