Paying Yourself as a Limited Company Creator: Salary, Dividends and Drawings

Moving your influencer business into a limited company changes how you take money out. Profit can no longer be drawn at will the way it can from a sole trader bank account. Payments to you become structured: salary through PAYE, dividends voted by directors, anything else treated as a director’s loan. Getting the mix right shifts several thousand pounds in tax every year. Getting it wrong creates problems that HMRC will eventually pick up on.

Salary vs Dividends: The Basic Trade-Off

Salary is taxed as employment income through PAYE, with income tax and National Insurance on the way out. The company gets corporation tax relief on it. Dividends are paid from post-tax profit, taxed at lower rates, with no NI, but no corporation tax relief for the company. The optimal split typically uses salary up to a tax-efficient threshold and dividends for the rest.

The Optimal Salary for Most Creators in 2026

For 2026 the most tax-efficient salary for a single-director creator company sits at £5,000 a year, the Secondary Threshold for employer NI. Some directors push to £12,570 to use the full personal allowance and qualify for full state pension credits, accepting a small employer NI hit on the bit above £5,000. The right level for you depends on your other income and pension contributions for the year.

Voting Dividends Properly

Dividends must be voted at a board meeting (which can be just you as the sole director) and documented with dividend vouchers showing the date, amount, recipient and gross value. HMRC challenges dividends that are not properly documented and can reclassify them as salary, which triggers backdated PAYE and NI charges. The admin is simple. Skipping it creates an audit problem you do not need.

Drawings, Director’s Loans and Section 455

If you pay yourself anything that is not salary, dividend or expense reimbursement, it counts as a director’s loan. Loans over £10,000 trigger a benefit-in-kind charge. Loans not repaid within nine months of the company year-end attract Section 455 tax on the company, charged at 35.75% on loans drawn on or after 6 April 2026 (loans taken out before that date keep the previous 33.75% rate). A lot of creators run a casual drawing habit and only discover the tax consequences at year-end when the accountant runs the numbers. Plan the drawings, do not let them happen by accident.

Pension Contributions Beat Dividends for High Earners

Employer pension contributions made by the company are fully deductible against corporation tax, avoid all NI, and avoid any personal tax on the way out (up to the £60,000 annual allowance). For creators with high profit and no immediate need for cash, redirecting profit into a pension instead of taking it as dividends produces significant combined tax savings once you stack the corporation tax deduction on top of the avoided dividend tax. The annual allowance can also be supplemented by carry-forward of up to three prior years of unused allowance.

Expense Reimbursement Without the Mess

Genuine business expenses paid from personal funds can be reimbursed by the company tax-free. Equipment, software, travel, professional fees, a proportion of home office costs. The reimbursement must be supported by receipts and the expense must be wholly and exclusively for business. Mixing personal and business spending in the same claim puts the whole claim at risk if HMRC ever looks at it.

The creators with the cleanest tax position run a fixed monthly salary through PAYE, vote dividends quarterly with proper documentation, reimburse expenses monthly, and contribute to a pension annually. A specialist creator payroll service handles the PAYE side and works with your accountant on the rest, taking the admin off your plate while keeping the tax position tight.
